Fero Király

Slovakian sound artist. He participates in artistic projects on the border of performance, sound-art and sound installations. He deals with interpretations of contemporary music, the development of audiovisual instruments and educational projects in the field of music, multimedia and creative coding.

He uses new, experimental borderline positions, creates his own digital tools and likes to collaborate on projects with other artists with a multidisciplinary focus. Together with Eva Vozárova, they run the ooo association, which is the main platform for these activities. As a part of their activities, they have been organizing the international intermedia event JAMA, since 2019.

Recently, he has been working on microtonality and live coding with digital media. With his latest sound installations “Chronik” and “Water music III” he addresses the topics of language and time. In his work he uses free open-source software: JACK and SuperCollider on Linux. Free software has always been an important part of his work and ethics, which is why he is a contributor to several open-source projects.

As a musical performer, he has devoted himself exclusively to the interpretation of the works of the 20th and 21st centuries, and to the detailed reproduction of Philip Glass’s early minimal music works, most of which he premiered in Slovakia - in various venues ranging from clubs to the two largest cathedrals (Košice, Bratislava) and many festivals. Thanks to this, his most famous projects include the Cluster Ensemble (with Ivo Šiller and Zuzana Biščákova), which won several awards and significant reviews in “The Guardian” and “The Pitchfork” for the album “Cluster Ensemble plays Philip Glass”.

In his pedagogical field, he is the author of the audiovisual musical instrument “Zvukodrom” for children and music education teachers, as well as the “Botanical Garden”, which includes graphical scores, compositions and sound games for children. This collection has recently established itself in Slovak primary art schools and has become part of children’s music education.

Fero Király graduated from the Music Department of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, where he studied piano. He works as a freelance artist and lectures on SOUND at the Intermedia Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava. He has lectured at the Comenius University in Bratislava at the Faculty of Philosophy and Pedagogy and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Banska Bystrica at the Faculty of Music - Department of Composition and Conducting. At the Pedagogical Faculty of the Comenius University, he also defended his doctoral thesis entitled “New Media in Art Education in Primary School”.
